Venue at Frauenchiemsee

The workshop venue is the monastery Frauenchiemsee on an island with the same name in the lake Chiemsee, which is about hour from Munich. The island Frauenchiemsee is car free and reachable with a ferry from several towns around Chiemsee. We will add more information as soon as it is available.

Traveling by Plane

Chiemsee is reachable from several major airports:

  1. Munich (MUC)

From Munich Airport there is a suburban train (S-Bahn) called S8 with which you can get to Munich East in about half an hour. From there, you can take a train to Prien am Chiemsee (takes about 50 minutes), from where you can reach Frauenchiemsee by ferry (there is a ferry combi ticket for the ferry and the train that brings you the 2km to the ferry, cf. the ferry website). You can lookup the train connections on the website of the German railway company. As starting position enter "München Flughafen Terminal" and for destination enter "Prien a Chiemsee".

  2. Salzburg (SZG) (Austria)

From Salzburg you can take the bus to Salzburg central railway station. From there are frequent trains to Prien am Chiemsee (takes about 50 minutes), from where you can reach Frauenchiemsee by ferry (there is a ferry combi ticket for the ferry and the train that brings you the 2km to the ferry, cf. the ferry website).

  3. Innsbruck (INN) (Austria)

Getting to the venue from Innsbruck will take considerably longer than from the other two airports. If you want to reach the workshop via Innsbruck and need additional information, please contact us.

Traveling by Car and Train

By car it is easiest to drive to Gstadt am Chiemsee and park at the local parking lot. From there, the ferry departs directly to Frauenchiemsee (from Prien it would stop at Herrenchiemsee first). Detailed descriptions can also be found here. There is a ferry combi ticket for the ferry and the train that brings you the 2km to the ferry, cf. the ferry website. In addition, you will get a small discount if you have a Bayern Ticket from the German railway company.

Getting around at Lake Chiemsee

The ferry will be able to take you to and from Prien/Gstadt and the bigger island Herrenchiemsee. The winter schedule for 2020 will be available at this link.

Further Information

Time

Germany uses the Central European Summer Time (CEST) like most other western and central European countries. During the workshop, this time zone is 2 hours ahead of UTC (UTC+2).

Electricity

All power outlets in Germany are of the “Schuko” type. Plugs of the two-pin “EuroPlug” type fit without an adaptor. The British and North-American plugs do not fit. The voltage is 230 V.

Money

The currency in Germany is the Euro (EUR, €). Credit cards are not as common as in other countries, but most shops and restaurants accept them. However, they may refuse them for amounts smaller than 5 €. Newsstands, bus drivers, and taxi drivers will only accept cash. ATMs are common and present at stations and shopping malls.

Shopping

Bavarian shopping hour-laws are strict! After 20:00 and on Sundays/ public holidays all shops are closed, with the only exceptions being shops in train stations and gas stations (but do not expect 24/7 opening hours for those). Keep in mind: 3rd of October is a public holiday in Germany (German Unity Day).

Internet

Public WiFi hotspots are uncommon in Germany and not even present in all cafes and restaurants. T-Mobile operates some of them in stations and airports (typically free for 30min). We are still determining whether it will be possible to get internet in the monastery.

Phone

The calling code for Germany is +49. A long distance phone number in Germany consists of the trunk prefix 0, the area code, and the subscriber number. An international phone number in Germany consists of the country code +49, the area code, and the subscriber number. The prefix for international calls from within Germany is 00.

The emergency number is 112 (no prefix). For the police, call 110.

There are several mobile providers (T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2) operating GSM/UMTS/LTE networks.
